What is a Hunting Propane Heater?

Propane heaters are a great way to stay warm when you do not have access to electricity. A propane heater can be either portable or a large freestanding unit.

The kind of heaters that we have reviewed are smaller portable heaters. Both types of heaters are technically portable, but the smaller heaters are able to be transported to campsites, sporting events, and more.

Propane is a type of natural gas that is used in many homes and business.

Propane Heater Safety

Propane heaters are safe if the user has some knowledge and follows the heater directions. The reason propane heaters can be dangerous is due to the natural gas. If this gas is leaking into the air or a confined area then it can cause a burst of fire if a match is lit in the area.

One way to make sure your heater is not leaking is to frequently smell in the area. Propane gas has a very distinct smell and is easy to notice.

Another important thing to note is the danger associated with propane gas in a confined area. Be careful when using a propane heater in a small air tight room or confined area. If the gas begins to leak it will be confined in the area and is more likely to cause CO2 poisoning if inhaled or cause an explosion if it comes into contact with a match.

If you are camping do not leave the propane heater inside the tent, and make sure to turn the heater off when you are not in the area. The heater may catch dry leaves or grass on fire if left unattended.

Propane Heater Uses

Propane heaters are commonly used at campsites, worksites, or sporting events. Because these heaters are portable, they can be used in any location desired. For example, we used a portable propane heater all winter to keep warm while building our first house.

These heaters allowed us to work in harsh conditions before heat and A/C were installed in the house.

What to look for when Buying a Propane Heater

When buying a propane heater is is important to look for power. First you should examine the space that you will need to heat, then you should buy a heater that is able to warm an area equivalent to that space.

Obviously a propane heater has limited ability outdoors, but you should gain an understanding for how close people will be able to get to the heater in order to stay warm. Some heaters are able to warm larger areas than others.
